সাইফ মাহমুদ জুয়েলের শৈশব ও বেড়ে ওঠা বরিশালের উজিরপুর উপজেলার শোলক ইউনিয়নের ধামুরা গ্রামে। একটি সাধারণ মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারে বেড়ে ওঠা তাঁর জীবনের প্রাথমিক অধ্যায়কে গড়ে দিয়েছে পরিশ্রম, শিক্ষা এবং মানুষের সঙ্গে নিবিড়ভাবে যুক্ত থাকার অভিজ্ঞতা। শৈশবেই শিক্ষা ও সামাজিক পরিবেশের প্রতি তাঁর আগ্রহ তৈরি হয়। তিনি ধামুরা সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয় ও ধামুরা মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়ে প্রাথমিক ও মাধ্যমিক শিক্ষা গ্রহণ করেন।
মাহমুদ জুয়েলের মা ৬৫ বছর বয়সী মমতাজ বেগম ধামুরায় তাদের পারিবারিক বাড়িতে বসবাস করেন। তাঁর বড় ভাই মো. মনিরুজ্জামান সেলিম ধামুরা বাজারে ওষুধের ব্যবসা করেন। মেঝো ভাই মো. সোহান হোসেনও একজন ব্যবসায়ী এবং তিনি বরিশাল দক্ষিণ জেলা যুবদলের যুগ্ম সাধারণ সম্পাদক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন। সেঝো ভাই মো. দুর্জয় হাওলাদার সোহেল সরকারি চাকরিতে কর্মরত।
জুয়েলের প্রয়াত বাবা শাহজাহান হাওলাদার ছিলেন একজন পল্লী চিকিৎসক। গ্রামের মানুষের কাছে তিনি ব্যাপকভাবে পরিচিত ও শ্রদ্ধেয় ছিলেন। জুয়েলের প্রয়াত বাবা শাহজাহান হাওলাদার কখনো রাজনীতির সঙ্গে যুক্ত ছিলেন না। তবে মাধ্যমিকে ভর্তি হওয়ার পরপরই জুয়েল ছাত্রদলের রাজনীতির সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে পড়েন। তাঁর রাজনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ডে পরিবার থেকে কোনো বাধা দেওয়া হয়নি।
প্রতিবেশী ও বাংলাদেশ মহিলা আওয়ামী লীগের নেত্রী অ্যাডভোকেট মোর্শেদা পারভীন বলেন, রাজনৈতিক মতপার্থক্যের বাইরে গিয়ে দেখলে জুয়েলের পরিবার গ্রামের মানুষের সঙ্গে ঘনিষ্ঠ সামাজিক সম্পর্ক বজায় রাখার জন্য পরিচিত।
তিনি বলেন, “রাজনীতির বাইরে গিয়ে যদি কথা বলি, তাহলে বলতে হয় জুয়েলদের পরিবার অত্যন্ত সামাজিক। গ্রামের সবার সঙ্গে তাদের ভালো সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। জুয়েল নিজেও মেধাবী ও ভদ্র ছেলে।”
আরেক প্রতিবেশী ব্যবসায়ী কাওসার মজুমদার জুয়েলকে তৃণমূল থেকে উঠে আসা একজন রাজনৈতিক নেতা হিসেবে বর্ণনা করেন, যিনি কঠোর পরিশ্রম ও নিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে এগিয়ে এসেছেন।
তিনি বলেন, “জুয়েল তৃণমূল থেকে উঠে আসা একজন নেতা। শ্রম, মেধা ও ত্যাগের বিনিময়ে তিনি রাজনীতিতে সফলতা অর্জন করেছেন। আমি তাঁর সাফল্য কামনা করি।”
ধামুরা মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষক জহিরুল ইসলাম বলেন, জুয়েল পড়াশোনায় মেধার পাশাপাশি সাংগঠনিক দক্ষতারও পরিচয় দিয়েছেন।
তিনি বলেন, “জুয়েল পড়াশোনায় যেমন মেধাবী, তেমনি তার সাংগঠনিক দক্ষতাও ভালো। নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার মতো সক্ষমতা তার রয়েছে।”
ছাত্রজীবন থেকেই তাঁর রাজনৈতিক যাত্রার সূচনা। তাঁর নেতৃত্বের অভিজ্ঞতার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অধ্যায় ছিল তরুণদের সংগঠিত করা, শিক্ষার্থীদের বিভিন্ন ইস্যুতে কথা বলা এবং রাজনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ডকে সাংগঠনিক কাঠামোর মধ্যে এগিয়ে নেওয়ার প্রচেষ্টা। দায়িত্ব পালনকালে শিক্ষার্থীদের অধিকার, শিক্ষা এবং গণতান্ত্রিক মূল্যবোধ নিয়ে তাঁর বক্তব্য ও অবস্থানও প্রকাশ্যে এসেছে।
তাঁর রাজনৈতিক দর্শনের কেন্দ্রে রয়েছে গণতন্ত্র, মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা, শিক্ষার্থীদের অধিকার এবং একটি অংশগ্রহণমূলক সমাজের আকাঙ্ক্ষা। বিভিন্ন সময়ে তাঁর বক্তব্যে শিক্ষা, মুক্ত চিন্তা, ক্যাম্পাসে সহাবস্থান এবং তরুণদের রাজনৈতিক অংশগ্রহণের বিষয়গুলো গুরুত্ব পেয়েছে।
ছাত্ররাজনীতির অভিজ্ঞতাকে ভিত্তি করে সাইফ মাহমুদ জুয়েল বৃহত্তর সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিক পরিসরে মানুষের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ততা, নেতৃত্ব এবং জনকল্যাণমূলক চিন্তাকে এগিয়ে নেওয়ার প্রত্যয় ব্যক্ত করেন। তাঁর কাছে নেতৃত্ব কেবল একটি পদ নয়—এটি দায়িত্ব, আস্থা এবং মানুষের প্রত্যাশার প্রতি দায়বদ্ধতা। দীর্ঘ রাজনৈতিক ও সাংগঠনিক পথচলায় তিনি নেতৃত্ব, সংগঠন এবং তরুণ প্রজন্মের রাজনৈতিক অংশগ্রহণকে তাঁর কর্মকাণ্ডের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভিত্তি হিসেবে ধারণ করেছেন।

তিনি এমন একটি রাজনৈতিক সংস্কৃতির প্রত্যাশা করেন যেখানে মতের পার্থক্য সংঘাতের কারণ না হয়ে গণতান্ত্রিক সংলাপের সুযোগ তৈরি করবে; যেখানে রাজনৈতিক সংগঠনগুলো মানুষের কাছে দায়বদ্ধ থাকবে এবং নেতৃত্বের মূল্যায়ন হবে দায়িত্ব, সততা, কর্ম ও জনসম্পৃক্ততার ভিত্তিতে।
তাঁর বৃহত্তর প্রত্যাশা হলো—একটি অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক ও সম্ভাবনাময় বাংলাদেশ, যেখানে তরুণদের মেধা ও শক্তি জাতীয় উন্নয়নের কাজে যুক্ত হবে, নাগরিক অধিকার সুরক্ষিত থাকবে এবং রাষ্ট্রের প্রতিটি স্তরে জবাবদিহি ও ন্যায়বিচারের সংস্কৃতি আরও শক্তিশালী হবে।
A Family Rooted in Dhamura
Saif Mahmud Jewel spent his childhood and formative years in Dhamura village of Sholok Union in Ujirpur upazila of Barishal. Growing up in an ordinary middle-class family, the early years of his life were shaped by hard work, education and close engagement with the people around him. From an early age, he developed an interest in education and the social environment in which he grew up. He received his primary and secondary education at Dhamura Government Primary School and Dhamura Secondary School respectively.
Jewel’s mother, 65-year-old Momtaz Begum, lives at the family home in Dhamura. His elder brother, Md. Moniruzzaman Selim, runs a medicine business at Dhamura Bazar. His second brother, Md. Sohan Hossain, is also a businessman and serves as the Joint General Secretary of the Barishal South District Jubo Dal. His third brother, Md. Durjoy Howlader Sohel, is employed in government service.
Jewel’s late father, Shahjahan Howlader, was a rural physician. He was widely known and respected by the people of the village. Shahjahan Howlader was never involved in politics. However, shortly after enrolling in secondary school, Jewel became involved in the politics of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). His family did not prevent him from becoming involved in political activities.
Neighbour and Bangladesh Mohila Awami League leader Advocate Morsheda Parvin said that, irrespective of political differences, Jewel’s family has long been known for maintaining close social ties with people in the village.
“Putting politics aside, I would say that Jewel’s family is very sociable. They have good relations with people from all walks of life in the village. Jewel himself is intelligent and well-mannered,” she said.
Another neighbour, businessman Kawsar Majumdar, described Jewel as a political leader who rose from the grassroots through hard work and dedication.
“Jewel is a leader who has emerged from the grassroots. He has achieved success in politics through hard work, intelligence and sacrifice. I wish him success,” he said.
Zahirul Islam, a teacher at Dhamura Secondary School, said Jewel demonstrated not only academic ability but also strong organisational skills during his student years.
“Jewel was meritorious in his studies, and he also had good organisational skills. He had the ability to provide leadership,” he said.
Jewel’s political journey began during his student life. An important part of his early leadership experience involved organising young people, raising various issues concerning students and attempting to advance political activities through an organised structure. During his tenure in different organisational responsibilities, he also spoke publicly on issues concerning students’ rights, education and democratic values.
Democracy, freedom of expression, students’ rights and the aspiration for a participatory society have remained central to his political outlook. At different stages of his political career, his statements have highlighted the importance of education, freedom of thought, peaceful coexistence on campuses and the political participation of young people.
Drawing on his experience in student politics, Saif Mahmud Jewel has expressed his commitment to strengthening engagement with people, leadership and ideas focused on public welfare in the broader social and political arena. To him, leadership is not merely a position; rather, it is a responsibility, a matter of public trust and a commitment to remain accountable to people’s expectations.
Throughout his long political and organisational journey, he has regarded leadership, organisational development and the political participation of the younger generation as important foundations of his work.
Democracy, people’s rights, nationalism and youth participation occupy a significant place in Saif Mahmud Jewel’s political philosophy. In his view, leadership is not simply a matter of holding an organisational position or fulfilling a formal responsibility. It is a continuous commitment to earning people’s trust, accepting responsibility and standing by them during difficult times.
He places particular emphasis on developing leadership among the younger generation, maintaining public engagement and promoting a more participatory political culture. His political journey has been driven by a commitment to his principles and beliefs, a sense of responsibility towards his organisation and a strong connection with ordinary people.

Democracy, voting rights, students’ rights and political participation have featured prominently in his political statements and activities. At the same time, his political career reflects an emphasis on organisational unity, communication with party workers and engagement at the grassroots level.
At the heart of Saif Mahmud Jewel’s political vision is the aspiration for a democratic, just, humane and participatory Bangladesh—one in which freedom of expression, political rights and human dignity are established as fundamental pillars of the country’s state and social life.
In his view, democracy is not merely a system of elections or a method of governing the state. It is deeply connected with people’s right to speak, their opportunity to determine their own future and their ability to demand accountability from the state. With these values in mind, he considers the younger generation to be one of the principal forces for future leadership in the country.
His vision for young people includes a Bangladesh where education serves as a key means of developing knowledge, creativity and leadership, and where universities and educational institutions provide safe spaces for free thought, rational discussion and the practice of responsible citizenship. He views students’ rights and participation as integral parts of a broader democratic culture.
He envisions a political culture in which differences of opinion do not become sources of conflict but instead create opportunities for democratic dialogue; where political organisations remain accountable to the people; and where leadership is judged on the basis of responsibility, integrity, performance and engagement with the public.
His broader aspiration is for an inclusive and promising Bangladesh where the talent and energy of young people can be channelled into national development, citizens’ rights are protected, and a culture of accountability and justice is strengthened at every level of the state.
