Jewel’s Political Journey Began at Dhamura College
The first organized chapter of Saif Mahmud Jewel’s political career began at Dhamura Degree College in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal. It was during his higher secondary years that he became involved in the politics of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). Although he later rose to the leadership of the central Chhatra Dal, the formative years of his political identity were rooted in his days at Dhamura Degree College. A biographical report published online identifies 2003 as the year he became actively involved in student politics.
Dhamura Degree College was established in 1970 through the initiative of local education enthusiasts. For decades, the institution has served as one of the important higher secondary educational institutions in the Wazirpur area. Alongside higher secondary education, the college now offers degree-level pass courses. According to the institution’s own profile, its students have also been involved in sports, cultural activities, social initiatives and humanitarian work.
It was as a student of this college that Jewel began his political involvement through the local unit of Chhatra Dal. According to his elder brother, Md Moniruzzaman Selim, Jewel was elected president of the Chhatra Dal’s Ward No. 3 unit in Dhamura Union during his first year of higher secondary education. For a young college student, taking on an organizational responsibility at the ward level marked one of the earliest significant steps in his political career.
During his tenure at the ward level, Jewel’s political activities primarily revolved around organizing local students and remaining actively engaged in the organization’s programmes. At the time, leading a student organization at the grassroots level provided him with practical experience in organizing members, maintaining communication with activists and carrying out organizational activities. His role in a single ward of Dhamura Union eventually paved the way for his involvement in the college-level leadership of Chhatra Dal.
His political responsibilities expanded during his second year. According to his family, Jewel became the general secretary of the Dhamura Degree College Chhatra Dal unit. The same information has also appeared in a recent biographical report.
Taking charge as general secretary of the college unit marked an important stage in Jewel’s political development. Unlike the relatively limited scope of a ward-level organization, the college unit required him to work with a larger group of students and coordinate activities within the educational institution. His involvement in college-based organizational programmes, communication with fellow students and leadership of organizational activities gradually broadened his political network and experience.
According to his elder brother Moniruzzaman Selim, Jewel’s decision to enter student politics did not face opposition from his family. They did not object to his political activities, allowing him to remain involved in student organizational work alongside his studies. His father, Shahjahan Howlader, was a rural medical practitioner and had never been involved in party politics. This, too, provides a different perspective on the family’s political background and Jewel’s decision to enter politics.
Another notable aspect of Jewel’s college years was his interaction with people in the local community. Statements from family members and local residents point to his social connections and active involvement in organizational activities. Neighbor and businessman Kawsar Majumdar described him as a leader who rose from the grassroots. According to Majumdar, Jewel advanced in politics through hard work, ability and sacrifice.
Zahirul Islam, a teacher at Dhamura Secondary School, also spoke of Jewel’s organizational abilities. According to him, Jewel was academically capable and demonstrated strong organizational skills as well as the potential to lead. While such assessments are based on the personal experiences and opinions of those who knew him, they offer an insight into Jewel’s social and organizational profile during his college years.
Another defining feature of Jewel’s college political career was his early experience of grassroots leadership. His progression—from leading the Chhatra Dal at the ward level to becoming general secretary of the college unit—illustrates how his political journey began within a local organizational structure. His years at Dhamura Degree College can therefore be viewed as an important early chapter preceding his subsequent involvement in larger political organizations.
The significance of Jewel’s college years, however, goes beyond a succession of organizational positions. His involvement in student politics as a young college student, his assumption of leadership at the local level and his subsequent responsibility within the college unit were all part of the process through which his political identity took shape. The organizational experience he gained at Dhamura Degree College later became an important part of the foundation of his political career.
In that sense, Jewel’s college years represent the story of his emergence from grassroots politics. From becoming involved with Chhatra Dal politics in 2003 to assuming leadership of the organization’s Ward No. 3 unit in Dhamura Union and later becoming general secretary of the Dhamura Degree College unit, he established a distinct political identity at the local level within a relatively short period.
Viewed separately from the broader chapters of his later political career, Jewel’s years at Dhamura Degree College stand out as a formative period—one in which his first organizational responsibilities, grassroots political experience and leadership roles began to shape the political journey that followed.
